About the children Founded in 1891, Children's Specialized Hospital is the largest pediatric rehabilitation hospital in the United States. Starting as a summer camp for children from the tenements of nearby cities, it soon became apparent that there was a great need to provide the children with medical care. From the 59 children in the late 19th century to the more than 16,000 children treated in 2008, Children's Specialized Hospital has grown to meet a never-ending challenge. The hospital provides a complete range of therapy programs to meet the needs of children, adolescents and young adults affected by brain injury, spinal cord dysfunction, and other disabilities. The mission of Children's Specialized Hospital is to be a center of excellence by providing family-centered quality health care to not only children who have suffered life altering injuries but also to their families to help them cope with their new and devastating circumstances. As parents who had a child with a severe brain injury, we understand and know the enormous loss and challenge that families experience. We wish to contribute to the quality of life of these children and their families. Parents of a child with brain injury face many unique challenges. At times the emotional challenges can seem overwhelming. We also realized that the hospital becomes a second home for families. You need every resource available to get through this difficult period. It is important that the child feels love and hope in a compassionate and optimistic environment, and that the hospital can to handle the medical as well as physical and emotional needs of everyone affected.              Children's Specialized runs what they describe as their center of excellence programs. The programs actively apply resources to advancing the technology and practice of rehabilitative medicine in each specific field. The goal of the Hospital is to continually develop programs that strive to provide rehabilitation to more and more patients while upgrading the existing facilities and starting new locations throughout the state.
